Introduction
Gangotri is one of the four Dhaams of Garhwal (holy pilgrimages of Hindus –
the other three being Yamunotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath). There is an 18th
century temple made up of granite rock at Gangotri. The temple is dedicated
to Goddess Ganga, who is believed to have descended from heaven after
centuries of penance by King Bhagirath. The king wanted the ashes of his
dead relatives to be washed away by the holy waters of Goddess Ganga.
